Respected firefighter Steve Apter, who rose up through the ranks to become one of the most senior fire officers in the country, is to retire in June, it has been announced.
54-year-old Steve started his career as a retained firefighter in Shanklin in 1990 before taking up a wholetime position at Newport in 1991. In 2011, Steve was appointed Chief Fire Officer of the Isle of Wight and in 2016 he moved on to join London Fire Brigade as Deputy Commissioner and Director of Safety and Assurance.
In 2019, Steve returned to the South Coast as Deputy Chief Fire Officer of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service having been in command at incidents in the Capital including the Westminster Bridge terror attack and the aftermath of Grenfell Tower.
Liverpool-born Steve, who is married with 3 children, will hang up his uniform and turn off his pager for the last time in June as he bows out of the fire service after 30 years’ exemplary service.
