Motorists now have to pay for all parking in Newport’s multi-storey car park as the first hour free offer has been scrapped.
The closure of the Co-Operative in Pyle Street last Saturday (6th February) has resulted in changes to the pay & display parking in the multi-storey above.
Previously, motorists received 1 hour of free parking and were not required to display a ticket. Now, a ticket must be obtained from the outset – whether parking for 5 minutes or 5 hours.
Many have been caught out this week and now face paying a parking fine having not realised the changes made to parking terms and conditions.
The move could be seen as another nail in the coffin for Newport’s High Street – not only the loss of yet another store, but the loss of convenient, free parking.

Simple, another reason to avoid Newport.
the council are too stupid to realise – no free parking, no customers, no shops, no business rates, no high street
This car park is not owned or operated by the council.
Just park in Morrison’s car park, it’s free for 2 hours!
Or park in M&S’s car park – free for 1 hour!
How short sighted can you get. You have to pay around £2 before you even start to shop. It’s a shame for the small businesses.
It isn’t a Council run car park as far as I know.
f all in Newport these days anyway bloody dump
Your paying £2 to park your car so you can go around and see all the empty shops in Newport .. it’s literally like spot the shop that’s still there
Another reason to shop online
I just dont get the thought behind this! There must be a underlining message here that is indicating that the councils dont want any town centers! What benefit is there in trying to run a shop! there is business rates, Tax, Rent and then the council chuck more cost on parking! It just doesn’t add up! I think you will find that there will be less people using the car park then the council will close it then knock it down and build flats I feel thats the long term plan
This car park is not council run!!!
I’ll never be going in the multi story car park again then. Thanks for the heads up.
Hello, Morrisons here I come.
Just do the decent thing – pop in and buy something, they make very nice pies!
You can’t co op is closed seems pointless keeping it tbh
Actually I was talking about Morrisons, The few times that I visited the Co-op i found it terribly depressing – like being in a cellar – which I should imagine was a contributary factor in its failure.
Nothing in Newport anyway ,it’s dead,Ryde is much more vibrant.
What about disabled parking is that still free?
hardly equality – pay for parking for able bodied, but free for disabled – discrimination against able bodied.
