One of the main roads through Ryde has become one-way for the next 6 weeks to enable yet more utility works in the town.
Motorists can no longer travel down St John’s Hill and across St John’s Bridge towards town, but the road remains open for those heading east towards Oakfield.
Southern Vectis say that their Routes 3 and 8 will be diverting from St John’s Church via East Hill Road and Dover Street to rejoin Park Road. Meanwhile, Route 2 buses will divert from Westridge Cross via Marlborough Road, East Hill Road and Dover Street and won’t be serving Oakfield inbound.
In addition, the Island Line rail replacement service is unable to serve St John’s Station on journeys towards Ryde. These buses will divert straight from Brading to Ryde Esplanade.
Diversions will be in place until 28th March.
The restriction on travel comes into force at the same time that both Ashey Road and Great Preston Road are closed in both directions. It means all traffic travelling from east to west will need to divert via East Hill Road, or alternatively use side roads off Monkton Street such as Rink Road and Park Road.
The closure of Great Preston Road has come under fire from motorists as the road isn’t actually blocked, with works taking place on the pavement. Vehicles – including local buses – are continuing to ignore the closure signs to transit through the area, including access to Harding Road.
Imagine when countless more cars fill our roads as once beautiful fields, woods, and trees are bulldozed into smoldering heaps, with the wildlife destroyed to be replaced with ever more charity kept, to soon overfill their free homes, then demanding ever more destruction never at their cost.

Why is it when you see Utility Companies, Island Roads, Amey and various builders all in vehicles with no masks on sitting next to each other!
Yet Fire Engines and ambulances etc staff all wear Masks!

Seems to be an internet company, who have blighted the roads for the last year. Once finished Island roads, will normally follow on, making good. Then when a customer wants connection, more traffic lights, for parking vans.

Just to play devil’s advocate, surely the road closures shouldn’t cause too many people a problem….WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE IN A LOCKDOWN!, although you wouldn’t think it, with all the traffic that is around.

The people in charge are idiots. They shut St Johns when there are temp traffic lights in East Hill road and Marlborough road. Also last week, Ashey Rd is closed and some moron closes Upton road. Do any of these people talk to each other? Also, why do they erect temp traffic lights days before any work starts causing backups and pollution. Someone needs to start controlling what these idiots are doing.
Business’s run from home in the future will need the higher speed fiber, so much needed for us.
Yes, and the island has a vibrant world leading tech industry. If we don’t do this they will move to the mainland and take their money with them.
