Cowes Harbour Commission has announced the introduction of an exciting new Port Operative Apprenticeship scheme to commence in autumn 2016 at Shepards Wharf Marina in Cowes.
The apprenticeship offers an excellent opportunity for young people with enthusiasm for working in a marine environment and a great way to start a career. Apprentices will be earn as they learn, combining practical training in a job with working towards an SQA Diploma in Maritime Studies – Marinas and Boatyards.
The apprenticeship takes between 18-24 months to complete and students will be involved in all aspects of marina activity from launching and recovering boats using a state-of-the-art hydraulic crane to participating in harbour patrols on the River Medina.
The curriculum includes a wide variety of mandatory and optional units such as mooring and berthing motorboats and yachts, moving loads in boatyards, maintaining marinas and boatyard equipment, and delivering excellent customer service.
The work-based training will be carried out primarily at Shepards Wharf Marina, working alongside experienced staff. There is no requirement for the student to attend college as the apprentice will be assessed on site by a college assessor on a 6-12 weekly cycle.
In order to qualify for the apprenticeship, students must be aged between 16-24, and have achieved at least GCSE grade ‘C’ or above for English and Maths. Applications are welcome from all students with an interest in boating, who are keen to learn and progress in the marine industry; relevant experience is an advantage but not essential.
