The Isle of Wight Council is advising that 2 coastal footpaths have been closed as a result of separate landslips today (Friday).
Pedestrians will have to divert owing to the closure of the path between Gurnard and Sticelett. Walkers will need to use Rew Street (this will be road walking) as a bypass before picking up the footpaths through Sticelett Farm.
Diversions are also in place at Shepard’s Chine off Military Road. While this is closed walkers will need to use the Military Road. This will be verge walking – but the grass has been strimmed today to help walkers keep off the carriageway.
Alternative routes are signed.
Islanders are being told not to try and use these paths until the are re-opened.
This is typical ‘nanny state’ overkill. The Gurnard to Whippance FP can’t have slipped over its whole length, surely a more local diversion could have been arranged.
I’m sure there are ways around but emergency services are in no position to help anyone else right now if the worst should happen, It’s not really a big sacrifice to keep away. There are many lovely walks around the area.
