Next month an Island woman will be challenging herself to swim from Sandown pier to Shanklin pier – approximately 1.8km – to raise £2,000 for an Ethiopian orphan.
In 2008, Julie Binnington went to Ethiopia and volunteered at an orphanage for children with AIDs/HIV or TB. She kept in touch with one of the girls, Centri, who has since left the institution of the orphanage and is studying to become a nurse. However, in order for her to continue with her studies, she is in need of financial support.
Julie will be taking part in the Pier2Pier swim on 6th August to raise funds to help Centri continue her medical studies to become a nurse.
The swim from pier to pier dates back to 1952 when the deep sea fishermen challenged each other to race from one end of the bay to the other. This tradition continues to this day to the point where no ‘skins’ or wet suits are permitted.
