Local Community News

celebratingagefestivalindependentarts2016flashmobIsle of Wight-based charity Independent Arts put on 3 events as part of the Celebrating Age Festival to showcase their community work to boost health and wellbeing through the arts.

The combined SingAbout communities held a ‘SingAbout Together’ event, bringing seven SingAbout Groups and those who attend Singing for Breathing together to sing some of their favourite songs. Many of the groups had contributed ideas to the programme for the afternoon. The groups met in the beautiful setting of the Newport Minster Church with over 140 participants in attendance for an hour of singing.

The Freshwater and Newport DanceMakers groups performed a ‘Flash Mob’ style dance in their local community. The Freshwater group wowed shoppers at the Co-Op Afton road with their dancing. The Newport group entertained those visiting the farmers market in Newport. Showing that age is no barrier to getting moving.

Hannah Griffiths, Project Manager said:

“It was a pleasure to see the groups performing outside their usual meeting places and showcasing the fun they have each week being involved in the SingAbout and DanceMakers projects. These projects really help boost your confidence – as shown by these performances as well as improving your health and making you feel good”.
