FORMER VILLAGE SHOP COULD BE TRANSFORMED INTO 3 HOUSES

Published at:

Planning permission is being sought to transform a former village shop into 3 houses, potentially putting an end to any hopes of the store ever re-opening.

Chale Green Stores in the South Wight could soon become housing if the Isle of Wight Council gives the go-ahead for the development.

The once-popular shop and deli ceased trading in October 2019 when managers Jo Hofmann and Chris Smith decided it was no longer financially viable. It has remained empty since.

Now, an application has been submitted by the building’s owner, US-based businessman Vern Tyerman, to form 2 houses from the shop building with the construction of a third beside it. There would be enough parking for 6 cars with associated landscaping. The houses are proposed to consist of 1x 2-bedroom, 1x 3-bedroom and 1x 4-bedroom.

Back in 2019, it was hoped that the local Parish Council could purchase the freehold of the building to ensure the shop remained as a community asset. However, Mr Tyerman backed out of the deal at the last minute.

Interested parties have until 5th February to comment on the plans by searching 20/02248/FUL.

Spanners close, is to Chale what P ennyfeather will be to Ryde. The ruination of such. Likely the shop had more stolen than merchandise sold. Let’s hope Tesco install more CCTV and doormen, they will need it.

Have you considered the possibility that your grandchildren may not want to live on the island?

Perhaps you or your children should have taken up the free contraception on offer, if unable to afford to have children then not having enough wherewithal to fund rent or obtain a mortgage. The Government clearly think there is enough homes available otherwise they wouldn’t keep allowing in so many newcomers to the UK, would they? Plenty of homes to rent here, you just need to ‘pay’ like others do, and not ‘expect’ just because you ‘want kids’ or, ‘had kids’ that homes, loss of green space and funding will always be there for YOUR selfish wishes, or failed restraint.… Read more »

Cindy, likely Tom never knew all that time ago when the flush of passion stuck him, that the future would be so bleak in the UK for his children, let alone his Grandchildren. But hear what you are saying, and NOW anyone having more than one child IF they, themselves are in receipt of state funding, be it rent, or tax credits, then you are bringing into this world a burden that you can’t afford YOURSELF, so how will these offspring all live? Prob is, so many get ‘given’ a better home, and more cash, freed food etc now than… Read more »

No, the likes of large chains like Tesco, just raise prices for all, small shops can’t afford to do that, as customers go elsewhere.

Some rum characters since the terrible estate was built, and as you say Ryde will deteriorate much further now. Seaview will be robbed as the rot spreads outwards.

I hope you never fall on hard times through Ill health and no fault of your own. I hope you never have to know how it feels to ask for help for your children’s sake, swallowing pride and moving through life embarrassed because of the stuck up attitudes of people such as yourself.

Mary, IF you have nothing to feel at fault for, then don’t feel shame.

We all know some cases are unavoidable, but we are also wise enough to know that a far greater percentage are.

Yet the sponging, parasitic low life who use having kids as a means of obtaining a roof, and an income, never come on to admit such, only people like you who are genuine.

YOU must know people like what cindy is referring to as they infest most places.

While everyone fights like rats in a sack the people responsible this continue to line Thier own and thier mates pockets while “running” the country. There is a lack of good quality affordable housing to rent and buy. Housing is almost completely unaffordable to hard working young people now unless they were lucky enough to have parents rich enough to stump up tens of thousands of pounds.Socail housing stock has been sold off at a knock down price and not replaced. So the people that care for our elderly and deliver our food etc..have no chance of decent rental accommodation and… Read more »

So sad to potentially lose a Village Post Office, bustling Village shop, and amazingly beautiful eating areas. Sign of the times, of course.
