Almost a year to the day after their building in Lake was devastated by fire, 2 students at the Island Learning Centre are celebrating after finding out they have been selected as runners up in the annual Jamie Oliver Home Cooking Skills competition.
Year 11 students Katie and Chelsea cooked a range of dishes embracing the ethos on healthy nutritional ingredients with inspiration for their dishes from around the world.
The girls received a personal congratulation message from Jamie Oliver and will also be receiving a 3-piece cooking essential equipment pack and the school will receive £50 worth of books from Pearson, who facilitated the competition.

Executive member for children’s services, Councillor Jonathan Bacon, said:
“A huge well done to Katie and Chelsea for, showcasing their high standard of cooking skills. After what has been an upsetting year for the school, following the fire and subsequent move in location, I am delighted that to be able to congratulate the school on the success of the pupils in this national, high profile competition.
“A special thank you to their teacher, Fiona Steel, who supported the students through the competition and I hope they continue to explore the skills and talents they have discovered.”
Headteacher, Mr Barnes said:
“It has been a hugely challenging year for students and staff alike and the opportunity to enter and then to be successful with their work is a huge achievement for them.”
This is the first year that the Island Learning Centre has entered the Jamie’s Home Cooking Skills Competition.
