A ‘small number’ of children at Barton Primary School in Newport have been told to stay away from school for the next 2 weeks after a confirmed case of COVID-19.
Parents were alerted to the situation this morning (Saturday) by text, with letters sent out to the parents of those children who have been in close contact with the positive individual.
It is unclear exactly how many pupils and staff have been told to self-isolate and which year group(s) is affected.
The news comes after 3 educational establishments – Binstead Primary School, Cowes Enterprise College and Island VI Form – announced positive cases within their school communities yesterday.
A formal letter has been published on Barton Primary’s website, which reads:
“Dear Parents,
“We have been made aware of a member of our school community who have tested positive for COVID 19.
“We know that you may find this concerning but we are continuing to monitor the situation and are working closely with Public Health England.
Article continues below this advertisement “This letter is to inform you of the current situation and provide advice on how to support your child. Please be eassured that for most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) will be a mild illness.
“The small number of children who have been in close contact with the individual who has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) have received a letter informing them that their child must stay at home for 14 days.
“The school remains open and your child should continue to attend as normal if they remain well.”

We received a phone call a email and a message though the school app so please don’t just say that parents were notified through text as that makes out the school Are not making the effort they have to inform parents off the current situation
I think you will find Barton had made phone calls to to the parents that children need to isolate for the next 14 days. That have been amazing with putting things in place since the start of all of this. And it just goes to show that no matter what you do anyone can get it
Us older peoples lives are at the mercy of the behaviour of the young now. What hope have we?
In some ways I am pleased that children are now getting or transmitting Covid 19.
There was a time when people believed that children were immune from this ghastly disease and even children believed this too.
Obviously not the case now, as the virus has evolved.
Time to shut schools to keep everyone safe.
Another big mistake made by the conservatives, all schools and colleges should have been part of this current lockdown.
Ah but didn’t you know? All the top-notch never-wrong scientists, the media, the SNP said the ‘children must be educated’ and the schools opened. And then this happened.
