17 people who tested positive for COVID-19 have died on the Isle of Wight so far this month, with further deaths expected as the pandemic reaches a critical point.
Latest figures show that 3 more Islanders have sadly died at St Mary’s Hospital, with the mortality rate increasing each day. On Friday and Saturday alone 8 people lost their lives.
To date, a total of 125 people have died with/from COVID-19 on the Island start the start of the pandemic – 73 have died in hospital and 52 have died within the community.
Although the roll out of the vaccine is picking up pace, with over 2.4million people now vaccinated, it has come too late for those battling the virus now.
Health Secretary Matt Hancock is due to make a statement at 17:00 this afternoon to update the country on the situation and outline how the country’s 65million population will be vaccinated between now and the Autumn.

i know the ferry staff are not allowed to prevent travel, but why aren’t the police and council organising a presence at the ferry terminals ensuring that those travelling are actually working.

It is even more sad now to read of deaths, so close to having a vaccine. The prioritising of such should NOT just be given to those in the NHS UNLESS at higher risk than those in other risky jobs outside the NHS.

This virus doesn’t cause deaths. It affects old people with underlying illnesses. In other words it may accelerate their deaths Albeit no proof of that.The flu, a far more serious virus, causes far more deaths to old people, but there has never been a need to document how many deaths before.

I think you will find this is the new strain of the virus. If it was people from the mainland why did we not get a massive spike in July after the first lockdown. remember the island was awash with tourists. this strain is 70 pc more infectious.
Yes but it didn’t originate on the island . We didn’t get a massive spike in July because it was gradually reducing by then and now the new strain has taken over largely but we all know our cases here massively increased around and just after Christmas which is when we had an influx of visitors. It’s doesn’t take a genius to work it out. I agree we all have a hand in it but when we were in lockdown the island by and large kept it low.
It’s not just mainlanders but also islanders coming back here. Anyone who didn’t need to use the ferries unless essential is to blame whether they be from here or there.
Why blame the ferry companies? Since March I haven’t really seen people on the island behave so well. Thinking the island is safe, the numbers are low. Groups of teenagers out all the time. Parents hanging about at various school gates, pubs packed, people not distancing in shops etc. If you drove past Busy Bees just before Christmas the car park was packed (among other places). Think island residents should take responsibility for their own actions

I have watched from a rather privileged position for months now islanders returning from holidays ,suitcases labled with flight tags usually not wearing face coverings with stinking attitudes especially the youth and young adults. Im exempt mate is all i get when i ask.

Exactly. You could even apply it to cancer deaths. It’s very rarely the original cancer diagnosis that leads to death but something that was caused by the cancer. In the end it’s the same thing. A person has lost their life and family and friends have lost a loved one.
