Youth charity UKSA is looking for a team of young people to take part in the Association of Sail Training Organisation (ASTO) Small Ships Race.
Island residents age 14 to 16 are being sought for this fantastic free opportunity, which requires no previous sailing experience. Training and fundraising events will take place throughout the summer in preparation for the annual race, which takes place on 3rd October.
Participants must be able to devote time to the programme, and attend regular meetings including team building and sailing sessions. There is no charge, but participants will also be expected to take part in fundraising activities to help cover the cost of running the training programme. Full training will be given, which could lead to a national recognised qualification.
Previous participant Alice Chambers said:
“Before I decided to take part in the Small Ships Race, I had never sailed and had no interest in sailing. Now I have participated in the programme I have done many things which I would never have otherwise done. I have even competed during Cowes Week.”
A selection day will be held at UKSA on Saturday 25th April, from 10:00-15:00. The deadline for booking forms is Thursday 23rd April.
If you are interested in taking part get in touch with Lee Jones, UKSA’s Youth Development Coordinator, for more details and a booking form. He is on [email protected] or 01983 294941.
