A 67-year-old man charged with causing damage to vehicles in Carisbrooke after tyres were slashed has been given a 12 week prison sentence, suspended for two years.
The Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this week heard how Terry Smith of Purdy Road, Carisbrooke was caught on CCTV damaging the tyres on two vehicles. However, although only charged with two offences, the court was asked to consider a total of 54 other occurrences of tyre slashing in the Carisbrooke area believed to have been carried out by Mr Smith over a period of 8 months.
Smith is said to suffer from mental health issues and has previously spent a period of time in Sevenacres Mental Health Unit.
The court was told that Smith, to a large extent, cannot remember what he has done.
Over £8,000 of damage was caused to vehicles in the area, however less than £420 has been ordered to be paid back.
