A 10ft monolith discovered standing tall at Compton Beach on the Isle of Wight, which has caught the attention of the media worldwide, has been proven to be manmade.
Less than 24 hours after Island Echo first reported on the monolith being discovered in the West Wight, it has now been revealed that it is made from wood and mirrors.
The tide has washed away the sand around the foundation of the reflective object to reveal wooden supports buried into the beach.
The discovery comes after artists in the USA recently captured headlines around the world by erecting a 12ft tall metal monolith in the middle of the Utah desert. Others have been found in California and Romania too. The ‘art’ is now being sold for $45,000.
It’s currently unclear who is responsible for the installation below the cliffs at Compton, but great effort must have been taken to get the object down the steps from Hanover Point.
Will Myles, Managing Director of Visit Isle of Wight, has said:
“We track all of our marketing efforts, but didn’t realise that our “discover the Isle of Wight” message had got to a galaxy far far away – I hope when they visited that they travelled the Wight way.
“‘Travelling the Wight way’ echoes Visit Isle of Wight’s serious message on visiting the popular Tier 1 destination at this current time (which also applies to alien lifeforms):
- Wearing a face covering when required
- Maintaining social distancing
- Washing your hands regularly
- Travelling only from Tiers 1 and 2 regions to the Island
- Adhering to all Government and local advice and restrictions”

Lucky they still have ‘steps’ down to the beach. The C ouncil have taken them from W hale C hine.
A foolish prank at this time, and thankfully now we won’t get so many dreamers coming here bringing their illness with them
If it had been at Ryde, or Sandown it would have been trashed within hours.
I can see why you’re called Chirpy
Shaun, Yes, cold hard facts are unpalatable aren’t they?
Much nicer to live in a dreamers world, of ufo’s, ghosts, after life, magic, and monsters, hence the popularity of Harry Potter, and more adult myth and magic fiction.
For if one sees reality it is like a child suddenly hearing the truth about Father Christmas.
Best to keep on dreaming and pretend the wood was put there to fool the public into thinking it is not from ‘out there’, thus enriching peoples dull mundane lives.
Aliens!
I cant believe anyone thought it was anything other than manmade, but then some think cov 19 is the flu and millions believe Trump so perhaps not that surprising that some believed it to be natural or from out of space.
Aww does Trump trigger your fragility? So adorable.
What a load of nonsense. Has Have real news items got so scarce we have to read this rubbish..
Most read news item on the bbc news website today!
Let’s hope it doesn’t encourage more CV carriers here to see a hole where it once stood.
People now really ARE that bored.
So desperate are they to escape the drudgery of their mundane existence that fantasy films and make believe video games can’t fill anymore, hence more are sadly turning to drugs and alcohol.
It is the IoW in Winter – what do you expect. It’s either the monolith or another article on FB6
So there we have it, conclusive proof that alien civilisations have trees.
Jus sayin, And a Jewsons, and rain, as the wood is tannalised.
And intelligent enough to know not to have put it at Ryde or Cowes or Sandown where the low life would have smashed it within an hour.
Give it a rest Chirpy, I bet your very boring
There are reports coming in of lots of infected aliens in Seaview and Bembridge – and they didn’t get here by flying saucer………….
No shit it’s handmade…
