Local pest control experts 5 Star Pest Control are warning Islanders to be vigilant as record numbers of rats are being reported, seeking dry and warm refuge in homes as temperatures start to drop across the UK.
A number of factors have contributed to the increased number of rats in 2020, with last winter being the 5th warmest ever recorded in the UK combined with the pandemic causing more food waste in residential areas brings the perfect conditions for breeding.
The changes brought about by the coronavirus pandemic are forcing rats to move away from closed down commercial areas and into residential areas, where waste is building up outside homes as people spend more time indoors.
David French, Managing Director of 5 Star Pest Control says:
“The industry has seen a significant growth in rat activity across the UK since the pandemic began. If we have a mild winter, this is likely to lead to increases in rat populations across the Island.
“Now is the time to check your property and garden to find structural defects and clear those untidy areas to deprive rats of entry points and harbourages.”
If you think you have a rat problem on your property, it’s important that you act quickly and call in a professional to prevent that problem from getting worse and impacting you or your family’s health.
David adds:
“We’re dealing with rats more and more on a daily basis, both in homes and businesses locally. We can be discreet upon request and tailor our service to accommodate your needs. We’re just a quick call, message or email away. Don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

people are leaving rubbish everywhere just dumping bags its not really a surprise that there are rats. i thought we all loved the island why would anyone do this.
because there are far more “non islanders” here now who don’t care and also a significant number of islanders have been brought up to be scumbags, who are so self entitled, that they think others are here to pick up after them.
Spot on freedom, IMAGINE how bad it will be when P en F eath et all is filled with the UK’s city rejects.
People have a lot to learn, that THIS is the good times, and once gone, never, ever to come back again.
Vote this vile council OUT next time
Not just UK’s city rejects, asy lum seek ers are going to be housed here, don’t you know?
Tips are booking slots only people will do this
If the council had even the slightest modicum of intelligence, they would have invested in every recycling tech under the sun and ensured that the tips were open 24/7 for locals to deposit every type of refuse for recycling at no charge.
This is what the council tax is supposed to be spent on.
We would end flytipping in one day – as fly tippers wouldn’t go to the effort of dumping it in a forest of outstanding natural beauty, they would take it to the tip, as no charge.
Oh, the council have intelligence, as now they are having their cake, and eating it too. For we are charged more each year on our council tax, yet pay these additional ‘stealth taxes’ for tip fees etc.
So WHO are the fools?
The most ‘useless’ non productive in society are living better than at any other time in history, yet the workers are having more and more taxes and costs imposed upon them.
Whilst our country allows in more unwanted and now unneeded as jobs for our own and homes for them become harder to source.
Vote these greedy, self serving council OUT next time.
100 percent agree
Probably because the tips were closed for months and when they reopened you could only dispose of some, selected garbage, by appointment only. Cost cutting, surely, by the Isle of Wight Council. It was inevitable.
Open the tip……
The tip is open and fully functional. People are just too bloody lazy to book a slot online and travel there. Easier just to go out in the car, open the door and dump it.
Wheely bins prevent rodents from getting easy food. THINK how easy a bin bag is raided compared to a steep bin. So, instead of starving, rats choose to get food in anyway they can, meaning more coming into homes, into sewers and coming out your toilet in extreme cases. Best keep the lid down, and if anything furry tickles your fancy, wack it with the toilet brush.
To think, the pest controllers used to be Council run and paid by us.
Now a private firm runs it and you have to pay yourself if you call them.
So we are getting a lot less for a higher council tax bill.
thats right – they spend more on their wages/pensions/expenses and then waste countless amounts on dubious adult social care.
Shot all mine , waiting for more
As always the council have ceased employing pest control officers, and now we have to pay for such WHILST our poll tax rises yearly.
This has happened with tip charges, and we now have to sort out our rubbish, drag it out to the pavement, drag it back in again, yet pay for, for less each year to them.
Clearly they are incompetent and need voting out, as they are overpaid, by us, for supplying less services each year.
My cat has been doing a great job, he’s killed three young rats in the past week! Meow!
Know a load of 2 legged varieties here!
Most of them are in the council
