Premier Inn has taken the decision to push back the much-anticipated opening of their new hotel in Sandown until the end of January 2021.
The brand new, 100-bed hotel and Cookhouse & Pub restaurant were completed earlier this year and both were due to open by the end of November.
However, the national chain has written to local stakeholders this week to inform them that the Isle of Wight’s third Premier Inn won’t be opening in 2020.
It’s said that due to the second national lockdown, the firm would have been unable to recruit and train new team members in time. In addition, from a commercial point of view, the hotel would be opening at a quiet time of the year for bookings.
The decision to delay the opening is said to give Premier Inn flexibility to prepare the site and recruit a team, as well as giving momentum into the busy Spring and Summer seasons.
Jacqui Allum, Head of Estate Development, has said:
“As a business we’re extremely grateful for the warm welcome we have received in Sandown since announcing our plans to open here. We ar every much looking forward to being part of the community when we open and, as freehold owners of the new hotel and restaurant on the Esplanade, are committed to the town for the long-term”.
It is now planned for the hotel and restaurant to open by the end of January 2021.
It was in December 2015 that Island Echo exclusively revealed that the Carlton Hotel was to be demolished to make way for a Premier Inn.

Such a shame Premier Inn have been unlucky with this new venture in Sandown.
Hopefully like goes back to normal soon and this Hotel prospers.
Glass half full i like.
Grow some and face real life as it is.
Best hope the homeless don’t find a way in, as will be there for a very long time now due to rule changes.
At least they will leave a ‘tip’, but not the sort one hopes for.
Glass half empty as always.
Yet astute .
