Police on the Isle of Wight have thanked the efforts of 3 lads and a local resident who came to help officers which saw Havenstreet flooded and obstructed by a landslide.
They helped officers in directing traffic and clearing the road after heavy rainfall, which saw many small landslides along with flooded roads and homes across the east of the Island.
Havenstreet Main Road was at one point under a few feet of water, rending the road impassable for motorists.
With the great community-spiritedness from those who offered to help, the road was able to reopen much sooner than it would have been waiting for Island Roads to attend.
Isle of Wight Police posted on social media saying:
“3 lads and a local resident all chipped in and stayed at the road assisting with directing traffic and clearing the road.
“Thanks to these guys efforts, PC Marsden managed to clear the road before highways could attend, preventing further flooding to the area with more rain now coming down.
However, they went on to say at one point there were 4 cars stranded in the floodwater having not realised the depth.
“On an educational note, many people risked the flood water and at one point there were 4 cars “lost at sea” as a result.
As per my earlier post showing an inspection cover open, please don’t risk deep flood water as you never know what you are driving into.”
Island Roads have been responding to incidents around the Island, working to clear blocked drains, closing roads that were deemed dangerous, clearing landslides and replenishing stocks at sandbag stations at Well Road, East Cowes; Simeon Street Recreation Ground, Ryde; St Mary’s car park, Cowes and The Broadway, Totland (near the roundabout).
HM Coastguard has been out assisting the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service in helping crews reach emergencies as quickly as and safely as possible during the floods.
Several homes were without power this evening and many roads became impassable as flash floods hit the East Wight.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has responded to many 999 calls to properties that have become flooded as a result of the heavy downpours. Crews worked to pump water away from properties at Binstead and Godshill as well as several other locations.
In a post on social media, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) said:
“We have received an extremely high volume of calls following the flash floods on the Isle of Wight this afternoon.
Assistant Director of Operations for HIWFRS Dan Tasker said:
“Fortunately, we have not been required to respond to any incidents involving lives at risk.
“The Environment Agency and local authority have implemented their well-tested flood response plans to tackle the flooding which is expected to subside over the coming hours.”
A flood warning has been put in place for the Isle of Wight by the Environment Agency which includes Monktonmead Brook and the Eastern Yar. A months’ worth of rainfall in a 4-hour timeframe has been recorded in Ryde with 60mm of rainfall being recorded in Wroxall in the past 12 hours.
Following this, a burst water main was reported in Bembridge as the night progressed.
