An Isle of Wight mum has expressed her horror after opening a packet of microwave rice and finding a disgusting sludgy sight.
Cowes resident Kate was cooking dinner for herself and her daughters when she put the packet of ALDI instant long-grain rice into her microwave. After less than 2 minutes, a putrid smell began filling her kitchen.
After sniffing out the cause of the sickening odour, Kate found it coming from her microwave. Opening the door and removing the rice packet, she noted that the horrific stench got stronger.
Kate said:
“If you could smell my house right now you’d want a bucket! Never have I smelt anything so bad.”
Carefully opening the packet, Kate found a nasty sight to match the smell, as almost all the rice in the packet had changed colour from its normal white to a dank green and brown. Sludge could also be seen squelching around inside the packet – which was only bought recently and had an expiry date of 2022.
Kate added:
“It smells like it’s got an animal in there thats been cooked in my microwave, it even looks like there is an animal in there – I cannot bring myself to look!
“The smell is still rotten despite all my doors etc open. It’s gross beyond gross!
“This was rice! Microwaveable blooming rice! I can’t even look what’s actually mixed up in it right now as just the smell is making me retch.”
Understandably, Kate intends to complain to the nationwide supermarket chain that has stores in both Cowes and Lake on the Island. Dinner plans for her and her family have also changed following the not very rice nightmare.
On the subject of tonight’s tea, Kate said:
“I managed to eat just a small piece of chicken with my daughter, I couldn’t face anything else after that! Now I’ve got to bleach my microwave!”
ALDI has been approached for a comment, and Kate has also been in touch with the store.
It comes just months after Lake’s ALDI store was forced to close after a mouse jumped out of a woman’s handbag at the checkout.
Google rice pouch mould and you’ll see how common this is.
