Homeowners at a Newport Assisted Living development have been celebrating this week, after one of the couples reached their 60th wedding anniversary.
Robert and Eileen Dean celebrated the milestone by cutting a cake at a special party which was attended by all the homeowners at McCarthy and Stone’s Somers Brook Court near Sainsbury’s, as well as the couple’s friends and family, including one of the original Bridesmaids at their wedding.
The pair married on 19th October 1955 in St Paul’s Church in Shanklin, before Robert’s career in the Royal Air Force took them all over the world.
Both are now retired and returned to the Island after their son-in-law started a posting as the vicar of two small churches in Cowes, moving to be closer to their family. After looking at a few properties in the area they decided on McCarthy and Stone’s Somers Brook Court development on Foxes Road as the ideal setting to relax and make the most of their retirement years.
Providing his tips for a successful marriage, Robert, 81, said:
“When you are happy and content with each other time just seems to pass you by. My advice would be that you have to be friends as well as love somebody, and never go to bed on an argument!”
Talking about their anniversary celebrations Eileen, 84, added:
“We had an absolutely brilliant day and everyone we spoke to said they really enjoyed themselves. It was great that so many of our family members could make it and we could introduce them to all the amazing friends we’ve made since moving to Somers Brook Court.”
Estates Manager at Somers Brook Court, Virginia Brown, added:
“A thriving community and companionship is just one of the many benefits of living in a McCarthy and Stone development, and Mr and Mrs Dean’s anniversary party is such a brilliant example of that.
“We can’t wait for more homeowners to celebrate milestone birthdays and anniversaries with us so we have an excuse to have another party!”
