People across the Isle of Wight and the rest of the UK are being urged to join in Clap For Heroes on Thursday.
The weekly appreciation clap is back – but this time in recognition of all COVID heroes, not just carers.
The clap will take place every Thursday at 20:00. The original applause ran for 10 weeks during the first national lockdown in 2020 but it is hoped this time around that lockdown will be significantly shorter than the first.
The movement’s name has been changed to Clap For Heroes to reflect the millions of heroes that keep the country going and have endured such challenging times.
A spokesperson for the campaign said:
“When we first started clapping for our incredible NHS staff, care workers and key workers last March, none of us had any expectation that we would be in an even worse situation nine months later.
“Last year the weekly applause united communities and had us talking to our neighbours whilst we acknowledged the immense sacrifices our carers were making. They were and still are heroes, but this time round we also want to recognise, remember and celebrate all of our heroes, including those most dear to us.
“This Thursday at 8pm we want the whole country to unite again (wearing masks and at a safe social distance from neighbours) clapping and banging pots and pans, getting the kids involved (who have also been heroes after all) and dedicating a few moments to thinking about the heroes directly in their own lives, those whom they have personally found to be just incredible individuals over the last nine months.
“We all need to stay connected and be there for each other and we all deserve a round of applause for what we have gone through and can expect from the coming months.”

oh please..not that crap again
Well, it had it’s moment but most ‘Key Workers’ would rather not be disturbed by all the racket. Especially as many are on shifts and need to sleep at such times .
[There is a nurse locally who has to try to console her frightened dog every time they do this and some idiot starts it all off with a firework.]
– Far better perhaps to lobby online the local MP and Councillors to properly reward underpaid care workers etc with a decent living wage ..
Absolutely agree. To applaud people you appreciate, yes, but to go outside and just clap the sky because the sheeple say you should, no. That’s just stupidity. This does not mean I don’t value the frontline workers for doing their job because I do but I won’t be clapping the sky like an idiot.
I will absolutely not participate in that farce for sure.
Nope!
IE define heroes?
does this mean shopkeepers builders electrician’s plumbers gardeners window cleaners????
it would get more response if you write who the heroes are
as you say shop workers,Postmen/Women,Dustmen/Women,
Bus drivers,School Administration workers(as only teachers got a pat on the back last time),
Police,Firemen/Women,Pharmacy workers,Take away food workers,Garage workers,and many more.
a hero is someone who acts valiantly in a critical moment, to avert a disaster.
a hero is not someone who turns up for work each day and does the job they volunteered to do, in return for the salary they agreed at interview, of their own free will, no matter how busy, or not they are.
my customers do call me there heroes when i stop water peeing through there belongings fixing the heating and so on just to keep them safe and warm so if you want to clap for me id be honoured
Tell that to the families of those who have died of cancer this year due to non treatment from the “wonderful NHS”
Exactly. This minor flu virus is causing more deaths to those with serious health issues
It’s the conservative government that has let people die from cancer, not the overstretched and under-funded NHS.
What about a clap for all the poor people who have lost their jobs who now have nothing coming in people have lost their houses because of this. Yet we have to clap some doctor who is still on full pay but refuses to do their job. And some NHS department that still haven’t opened back up. And they get all the offers NHS discounts priority shopping times deposit contributions on Barratt homes. Haven’t seen any offers for struggling families
Struggling families? If you can’t afford children you should keep your pants on.
Who said anything about not being able to afford children????? People didn’t know this was going to happen didn’t they and that people would lose their jobs. Hang on I would like to have a child in a year or so but best not because we might have another pandemic or I would like to buy my first house next year but best not we might have another pandemic. Get in the real world money bags you must be a GP that’s refusing to work.
You are so ignorant. Hard working people with kids could afford them before this and nobody could have foreseen this. I suppose you have no problem affording anything you want
thing is David a lot of people could afford to have kids then the council take as much money as posable from people.
Absolutely not . Stupid idea .
Bollocks!but….let’s all clap for our gov council and mp doing such a sterling job
NOT!!!
I will clap when the Tories are out!
What a total Shambles they are.
Ha ha, you still think that theres a difference between labour and Tories? Lol. You are about 30yrs behind ha ha.
What a saddening response. I think u will find a brief clap once a week gave most NHS staff and carers the boost to keep going despite being scared, stressed, and exhausted. Believe me im sure most would have rather been redecorating their houses or enjoying the sunshine too in the first lock down…but their drive to help others kept them going. Sorry a little clap was such an inconvenience…
They don’t care – it’s been politicised now. Just pay them more.
I think you’ll find theres a huge part of hospital staff that are just doing nowt different but there everyday jobs no covid patients so give over. Of course the direct covid nurses are angels
Clapping only now for key workers .. .of which there 1000s…is not only stupid..pointless but a total insult too them as they’ve all been keeping us going too.doctors dererve fa cos they’ve all but disappeared.
So if wanted too make them all feel apreciated should of thanked then face too face way back.means so much more.
Not let little brats come outside cracking ridiculously loud on a saucepan annoying all who want too sleep!!
No wonder the world is laughing at us.
For inoculating more than the rest of Europe put together?
No, because we have a clown for a Prime Minister, “leading” a government who have grossly mismanaged the response to this pandemic, using wins such as inoculation to convince people they’re doing a good job.
No way. The previous event is credited to a dutch woman, Annemarie Plas, who observed a similar event in the Netherlands. She ended it because it has “had its moment”. Are we expected to jump every time she clicks her fingers?
It would be far more beneficial to our heroes if all of those involved in this campaign became vaccine volunteers instead.
This time it’s the UK government asking.
Babe, Annemarie is not asking you to do anything.
Sheep
Let’s just clap ourselves for getting through this so far. We all have a job to do that contributes in some way to keep it going.
If the Tories want to show appreciation to nurses and doctors, give them a pay rise, not that Cummings chap.
Instead of this clap crap trap why not give NHS workers what they truly deserve… A pay rise..and better funding ie more nurses or carers. Let everyone go back to work and then they will no excuse that they can’t cope with covid. Nightingale London has 50 patients but can take 4000!?
A rise for WHAT? The largest majority are NOT on the ‘front line’ and have avoided more patients then EVER before.
Many staff are in offices just answering phone calls, not at risk, and doing NO MORE than volunteer staff do in the Samaritans and similar places, paying lip service to the publics woes, but in reality just scrolling through f.b on their phones. I know this is so.
Need to cut most of their pay to pay for all this, not throw more money at those of them for doing less.
Some are at huge risk and working really hard, but to clap those, or reward those using this dreadful illness to gain praise or fiscally is morally so very wrong.
I was referring to those exposing themselves to the virus
Really!!!
I didn’t see people clapping for the brave military personnel when Iraq and Afghanistan kicked off !!!!
Well they shouldn’t have signed up to be politicians assassins, invading other countries at the whim of the war criminal Tony Blair.
More baaaa, baaaa, baaaa.
What is a ‘hero’ in this context?
Anyone who can be exploited to sell the agenda of fascists and sell the impression that something is happening when it’s not.
Certainly a growing number of people are now agreeing with your line of thinking David. Unsure exactly ‘what’ all this will be used for by Governments that they could not have ‘done’ in other ways, but something doesn’t sit right with all this, that is for sure.
Anyone else getting a sense of déjà vu?
Why clap it’s their job to look after the sick, would anyone clap me for doing mine
Was wondering when they were bringing this shit back! Bet the sheep can’t wait until 8pm!!
No no no, getting mature people clapping outside homes on a freezing night is just plain silly…don’t do it unless you want hospitals even more crowded
How about people do the right thing to begin with.
In the Summer with this clapping lark, there was some bloke using it as an excuse to promote himself. Thought he was a good singer on a Karaoke machine. Probably wanting to get on the telly look at me aren’t I wonder proving this service. It was awful and went on for ages.
If everyone did as they were meant to we would not be in this mess. I just despair at people.
What is the point? They asked us last year to stop doing it, so it’s terribly disrespectful to go against their wishes. The NHS would be happier if we just stayed indoors.
