The Island’s contingent of the Army Cadet Force is currently seeking young people and adults to join their ranks.
C Company – part of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Army Cadet Force – have 5 Detachments across the Island (Newport, Ryde, Sandown, Godshill and Freshwater) that meet on evenings during the week.
2nd Lieutenant Stuart Brown of C Company said:
“We are currently seeking to get more of the island’s youth involved with us, if you are in at least Year 8 at school and aged 12-18 the ACF (Army Cadet Force) is open to you.
“The ACF is not military school, but a uniformed youth organisation that is sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. Our cadets learn valuable skills such as navigation, first aid and field craft along with military knowledge; they have the opportunity to build life long friendships. We also encourage personal discipline and self responsibility that puts young people in good stead for later life.”
The local cadets meet for 4 weekend camps on the Island each year and spend 1-2 weeks in August on the mainland for an annual summer camp. Many cadets from the Island have also had the opportunity to attend regional and national events ranging from Sports Competition, skiing in Canada and Bavaria to more specialist skilled courses up and down the UK.
C Company are also keen to hear from anyone interested in becoming an Adult Instructor with them. If you are aged 18-60 the application process is open to you.
2Lt Brown added:
“You will gain new skills, practical training and valuable experience whilst volunteering with us. You do not need a military background and we will provide you with all the training you require”.
