Staff at Newport’s Matalan store will be among the thousands supporting Earl Mountbatten Hospice’s Walk the Wight – and they won’t even be leaving the store to do it.
Many staff will instead be fitting themselves with pedometers and clocking up the miles as they go about their business in the store over the Walk the Wight weekend. Others will be encouraging customers to donate to the hospice as Matalan goes all out to support the May 10 event.
Assistant Manager Kim Masterton explained:
“There is a really positive group of staff here and they are all very keen to support the Hospice.
“Because of work commitments many are unable to actually Walk the Wight but they will be making sure they are there in spirit. They will be carrying pedometers and we hope to clock up as many miles as we can. Collectively we hope to cover a far greater distance than the 26-mile Walk the Wight and we want to raise as much money as we can in the process.”
Last year big-hearted Matalan staff organised fundraising events that raised around £8,000 for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice, their local charity, and the NSPCC which is Matalan’s nationally-chosen charity (pictured right).
Kim said:
“We all like to do our bit to support good causes and we are delighted to help out such a fantastic cause as the Hospice.”
Katie Radburn Corporate and Major Donor Fundraiser at the Hospice, said:
“This is a really imaginative way of entering into the spirit of Walk the Wight and we hope Matalan staff and customers enjoy a successful day. We are really grateful for the ongoing support from Matalan.”
