christmastreeswitchonFirefighters were joined by the family and friends of Kiri-Jade Hodgkinson – who died following a road traffic collision in January – for the switch of the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service’s Christmas lights at Newport Fire Station on Sunday.

The Christmas tree can be seen from miles around as it sits on top of the station’s training tower, however it is now shining brightly after Megan Duff, sister of Kiri-Jade, switched on the festive decorations.

newportfirechristmastreeMembers of Blue Watch had worked hard over the previous day shifts to get the large tree anchored safely to the top of the tower and decorated with the familiar illuminations.

Watch Manager Martin Poynter handed over the remote control power switch and, after a countdown from ten, Megan lit up the tree.

The service’s aerial ladder appliance was then used to take Megan to the top of the tower to view the town’s tree up close.
