An Isle of Wight family received a rather unwanted Christmas gift this year when they opened a bag of salad to find a dead and decomposing mouse inside.
The salad was purchased from Sainsbury’s in Newport and although 2 days over its ‘use by’ date, Christine Egerton and her son Michael didn’t expect it to be quite as far gone as it turned out to be…
The rancid smell from the dead animal, which has been described as ‘slippery’, left the mother and son duo physically sick and the house smelling.
Unsurprisingly, the family were put off their Boxing Day dinner and will be checking their salad twice in the future.
An investigation is now underway to ascertain where the contamination occurred.
The Italian Style Salad, with a best before date of 24th December, was purchased from Sainsbury’s in Foxes Road, Newport.
A spokesperson for the supermarket giant has said:
“We are in touch with the customer and are investigating the issue.
“We have apologised for her experience and offered a gesture of goodwill.”
