The Isle of Wight Council are warning local residents about a new telephone scam, which sees households receive a call from a person claiming to be from the council.
It has been reported to the Island’s trading standards service that homeowners have been receiving a fraudulent phone call from a withheld number. The scam sees the caller saying they are from the council and that a mistake had been made with the council tax band of your property, before asking you how you pay your council tax, which is often by direct debit.
The scam caller is said to then ask you if they could supply your bank details and that a one off payment of £55 they will get a month off your direct debit and a likely saving or refund of several thousand pounds in the future.
This is a scam and these phone calls are not from the Isle of Wight Council. If you receive a phone call like this, do not give out your bank details and hang up the call.
