COUNCIL URGE REDUCTION OF FOOD WASTE THIS HALLOWEEN

pumpkinhalloweenWith Halloween approaching, the Isle of Wight Council is working with a local cookery academy to encourage residents not to generate food waste but instead use parts of pumpkins to make meals.

Many people will be buying pumpkins to make Halloween lanterns but many residents will more than likely throw out the flesh when hollowing them out.

Michele Newton from Cowes based Four Seasons Cookery Academy has provided two recipes for pumpkins, which can be viewed on the council’s website.

The first is a pumpkin and sweet potato soup, and the second is a vegetable pumpkin crumble.

Itis the second time Four Seasons has worked with the council to provide recipes for foods that would otherwise usually be thrown away, with the organisation providing meal ideas last Christmas and new year.

To view the new recipes, including last year’s Christmas ideas, log on to www.iwight.com/waste and click on ‘food waste’.

The council is also running a survey seeking views from residents on the current waste collection service as well as considerations for the future. The survey runs until 7th November and can be accessed by going to www.iwight.com/waste and clicking on ‘Waste Survey’.
