Shoppers at Tesco are now being restricted on the number of items they can buy for products such as toilet roll, in a bid to stop Islanders from panic buying.
The supermarket giant says that there is enough stock so there is no need to panic buy, but the measures have been put in place to prevent bulk buying.
Flour, dried pasta, toilet roll, baby wipes and anti-bacterial wipes are now restricted to 3 per person. In addition, items such as face coverings, eggs, rice and canned veg have limitations when shopping online.
Earlier this year, in the days and weeks leading up to the national lockdown, the shelves of shops across the Island were stripped bear by locals stocking up on daily essentials. Now, with the coronavirus pandemic going south, supermarkets are seeing yet another wave of bulk purchases.
Morrisons in Newport and Lake have already imposed restrictions on the number of items shoppers can buy, as previously reported by Island Echo.
A spokesperson for Tesco has said:
“We have good availability, with plenty of stock to go round, and we would encourage our customers to shop as normal.
“To ensure that everyone can keep buying what they need, we have introduced bulk-buy limits on a small number of products.
“To help our customers shop safely, we will also have colleagues at the entrances of our larger stores to remind customers about the safety measures we have in place, including the legal requirement to wear a face covering.”

Why are people so greedy and selfish
greater chance of survival Ron and ensures that you have what you need -everyone else is not your problem
Bloody idiotic comment. Selfish and senseless prick.
Because they are retards .
It’s media stories like this that kicks off panic buying. Thank you very much. Here we go again!
The selfish morons are out again and theres not even a bloody lockdown so whats their excuse for bulk buying this time.
Panic buyers = people of extremely low intelligence, and extremely high selfishness.
No plato – panic buyers are astute and forward thinking individuals that are making sure they will get through any upheaval just fine
Absolute rubbish you speak, i suppose you are one of the selfish halfwits.
Here here Plato. Absolutely selfish morons.
No plato – panic buyers are astute and forward thinking individuals that are making sure they will get through any upheaval just fine
It’s ok to have a few essential items in your cupboard just in case of sickness. Long life milk, canned soup and bread in the freezer. BUT to buy on the scale I witnessed earlier this year is blantantly selfish. 7 packs of 24 toilet rolls a woman had in her trolley! It was all she could do to get to the checkout because they kept falling out. 7 packs of 24, really!!!!!! This was before supermarkets put a limit on certain items.
Must have had a bad attack of the sh*ts.
You are what’s wrong with this country. Always out for yourself with no thought of anyone else. Total disgrace and frankly have no right to even comment! Bloody twat!!
Completely agree Plato. Those panic buyers should be banned and forced to have rations!! Selfish, retarded twats!
more for you then, eh.
As long as supermarkets don’t start rationing daily essentials such as booze, crisps, chocolate etc. we’ll all get through this unscathed.
Baaaaa Baaaaaa.
Why would anyone want to buy 3 packs of toilet rolls. Just do your normal shop. Headlines like this do not help
Its interesting, BREXIT coming…no deal could push up prices…less trees in the world, forrest fires etc crap paper gonna cost more…i’ll stick to my dish rag thank you. Let you lot fight it out !
I can’t honestly say I’ve seen bears in any supermarkets!:)
If you need a proof reader, just let me know!
They wouldn’t want to double their standards yet, they’re going for the ‘most improved’ next year.
Went into Tesco this morning. Hardly anyone there. The bog rolls had taken a hit, but still plenty there. The locusts must have already been out. Do not listen, no lockdown.
I don’t image the island will be put into lockdown again. As long as the numbers don’t increase dramatically and people remember HANDS, FACE, SPACE, hopefully we will be ok.
‘stripped bear’ ? That’s illegal ! Cmon proof readers… ‘stripped bare’ LOL
It conjures up some interesting ideas, doesn’t it? Lol. 😉
Why … why are people so selfish and inconsiderate! If they keep to their normal shop, then there’s enough for everyone and the supermarkets won’t have shortages, it’s not rocket science
I am not interested in “enough for everyone” nor do I care and I am only interested in enough for me. I will be shopping first and early – to make sure I get what I need and want.
You will always get the selfish idiots who don’t care if anybody goes without as long as they have a 1000 toilet rolls in the spare room lol
I will buy as much as possible, to ensure that my cupboards and storage areas are full of non perishables. – I didn’t run out of anything in the full lockdown, didn’t go without anything and I will go from shop to shop, buying 3 of everything if needed.
Your choice if you wish to risk running out of stuff and go without
I didn’t panic buy and surprise surprise I didn’t run out of anything either. You sad pathetic selfish idiot.
Were not even in lockdown…..why are people presuming the IOW council will put us in lockdown. It is down to them after all now, local decision, not Westminster. They didn’t even put a stop to second home owners travelling here earlier in the year when the whole country WAS in lockdown! Stupid, selfish shoppers will create a shortage themselves due to buying way more than they actually need.
Where is mr justice
Going from supermarket to supermarket buying up all the toilet rolls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ha Ha!!!!!
Sat on YouTube dreaming of conspiracy theories more like. People like justice won’t buy toilet rolls they would use a sock
Why are they letting customers buy 3 of anything?
In my book buying 3 of something IS panic buying – at that rate the shelves will soon be empty.
If we had sausages, beans and mash for supper in our house, we would need 2 tins of beans. There are 5 of us, and we all have big appetites. So when going shopping, I would want to buy at least 4 tins, and that does just 2 meals. Not everyone has a small family.
Always keep something in your cupboard then so that you don’t have to bulk buy all at once – simples.
We r not in lockdown yet the pm has restricted in different parts of the country so y panic bye if feel sorry for the elderly that can’t get essentials selfish greedy gits
