Red Funnel has announced a number of important changes for all customers travelling on their vehicle ferries for 5 day periods over the next 3 weeks, starting this Sunday.
The affected dates are as follows:
- Sunday 9th January to Thursday 13th January
- Sunday 16th January to Thursday 20th January
- Sunday 23rd January to Thursday 27th January
During this period, vehicle ferries will need to operate out of a temporary berth, Berth 25, which is located 1 mile down the road from their main Southampton Terminal 1.
On the impacted dates, Red Funnel asks that all those travelling in a vehicle and departing Southampton to proceed direct to Berth 25 via Dock Gate 4. Using a sat nav? Enter postcode SO14 3ZH (for National Oceanography Centre), then follow signs to Berth 25.
All vehicles will be loaded / unloaded via their bottom (E) Deck only.
As a foot passenger, Red Funnel recommends you use the Red Jet as an alternative if you’re travelling with them on these dates.
All foot passenger tickets and Season tickets for these dates will be eligible for a free upgrade to travel on this service, and the Red Jet is now also able to accommodate passengers with bicycles (11 spaces available – first-come, first-served).
There is also a free water taxi service operating between the East and West Cowes terminals between 06:00-09:00 and 15:00-20:00 on the affected dates.
A limited numbers of foot passengers can still be accommodated on the vehicle ferry and therefore Red Funnel will be operating a foot passenger transport service between their main Southampton Terminal 1 and Berth 25 for arrivals and departures.
A spokesperson for Red Funnel has said:
“While we do not anticipate any disruption to our service and timetable and are committed to ensuring your journey is as smooth as possible, we do thank you for your cooperation and understanding should any unexpected delays arise during this time.
“The works we are undergoing at Southampton Terminal 1 during this time are part of a larger £2M investment in upgrades to our ferry maintenance facilities, enabling us to better serve you for years to come.
“We appreciate your support in adapting your journey during the impacted dates.”

Great way to start the year red funnel…disruption cancellations anxiety and stress…basically the same way they ended last year !
Yes, and now all the holiday makers have gone we’re reduced to hour service on other routes. Treated like cattle. Disgusting. Time to start some demonstrations in the summer at the various ports to get the government to see we’re being screwed.
Demonstrating at the ports ?
Bit ott init, we are not french Fred.
Yes, the ferries are a pain, but that is the price you pay for living on an island.
Stop moaning, maintenance work needs to be done. Better it was done now rather than at peak season.
I agree. At least you can cross off some future renovations for the forseeable future.
They’re not cancelling any services for this…
