Sainsbury’s has warned that 3,500 people could become jobless across its supermarkets and Argos stores – leaving the future of Isle of Wight stores in the balance.
In-store meat, fish and deli counters are permanently shutting due to a lack of shopper demand, with a total of 420 Argos stores closing down over the next 3-and-a-half years.
It is unclear at this time if the Argos store at Gunville will close.
In a statement, the retailer said:
“Whilst we will aim to find alternative roles for as many colleagues as possible, around 3,500 of our colleagues could lose their roles.”
Sainsbury’s new chief executive Simon Roberts, who took over in June, said:
“We are talking to colleagues today about where the changes we are announcing in Argos standalone stores and food counters impact their roles.
“We will work really hard to find alternative roles for as many of these colleagues as possible and expect to be able to offer alternative roles for the majority of impacted colleagues.
“Right here and now, I and all the team are focused on supporting and delivering for our customers in the days and weeks ahead.”

How is Sainsburys affected! Argos is seperate in there obv.but supermarkets have and still are making a killing?
Because they are shutting their meat, deli and fish counters!!
Try reading the story!!
Sainsbury own Argos.
Wtf has this got to do with the proposed closure of Argos stores? Go and take your selfless comments and stock them where the sun don’t shine
The deli hasn’t been open since the last lockdown.
So no decent cheese now, or pork pies, salami and many other things.
Yes they do sell packaged stuff but its not the same.
No Tickler cheese 🙁
Will have to go elsewhere now.
There would have still been a demand for the deli, cheese, etc counters if they hadn’t have kept them continuously closed after the original lockdown.
No, as money gets tight, then the better quality stores have to cut back to keep competitive to match the cheap stores who never have had such deli, wet fish and other unnecessary cheese counters.
So like much in our life living standards and quality of life grow daily worse.
