Southern Water plugged more than 22,000 leaks in 2014/15, maintaining its industry-leading position.
The result was thanks, in part, to the 30,760 customers who called the company’s 24-hour Leakline and to the leakage teams which worked around the clock to find and repair leaks across 13,700km of water mains.
Efforts were also supported by new water meters which automatically detect leaks in customers’ pipes.
It means the company has beaten its target set by regulator Ofwat for the fourth year running, and remains the UK’s best performing water and wastewater company for leakage.
Water Strategy Manager Meyrick Gough:
“I’d like to thank customers for helping us continue to keep leakage levels down. Finding leaks across 13,700km of water mains is not an easy task and we’re grateful to the public for contacting us so we can deal with leaks promptly and save water.
“Reducing leakage forms an important part of our water efficiency plans to manage supply and demand over the long term. This is why, in our 2015-20 Business Plan, we promise to bring levels down even further – by nearly two million litres of water a day by 2020.”
