At around 15:45 on Tuesday, two horses were being ridden along the High Street in Brading when a gold coloured Nissan Micra collided with one of the horses when it attempted to pass with traffic approaching from the opposite direction.
The driver did not stop.
A 92-year-old male is assisting Police with their enquiries.
Investigating Officer, PC James Holden of Isle of Wight Roads Policing Unit said:
“Luckily the riders were uninjured, but they have been left shocked by what happened.
“One of the horses is believed to have minor muscular injuries which might need further treatment.
“However this could have resulted in far worse injuries to the horses and ultimately their riders.
“This was a busy time of the day and we know there were quite a few people who witnessed this incident.”
Witnesses to the incident are being sought. Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Holden at Shanklin Police Station by phoning 101 and quoting ref 44130455316. Information can be given anonymously by phoning the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
