English Heritage has launched a recruitment programme for volunteers to take part in the new Childhood at Osborne project which launches at the Swiss Cottage in April 2014.
At least 15 posts have been created and an open morning is being held at 10:00 at Osborne on Friday 7th February, where anyone who is interested can learn more about the opportunities available.
Supporting either the family or schools learning programmes, volunteers will help bring the Swiss Cottage quarter alive and engage visitors with the stories and personalities of the Victorian Royal children. Family focused volunteers will get involved with welcoming visitors, storytelling, object handling and assisting with activities as well as guiding for a supported visits programme. Volunteers in the schools team will support visiting education groups and deliver facilitated education sessions both at Osborne and in schools.
Anna Moreton, Audience Development and Volunteer Manager for the project comments:
“English Heritage is committed to involving volunteers in our work and creating opportunities at Swiss Cottage was an integral part of the project from the outset. Our aim is to bring history to life for our visitors, and volunteers can really make the difference, particularly for children and those with additional needs.”
“We are looking for confident, effective communicators and team players with a positive attitude who enjoy working with children and families. It may be particularly appealing to young people on a gap-year and those considering going on to teacher training.”
English Heritage volunteers receive training and development opportunities, travel costs and a volunteer pass to all our sites after successful completion of the trial period.

Childhood at Osborne was made possible by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), the Garfield Weston Foundation and other donors. The volunteering opportunities have been funded by the HLF as part of the project.
