There will be little chance of a last-minute dash for the Wightlink ferry from 1st January as a 40mph speed limit will be imposed on the main route into Portsmouth.
As part of the traffic management plans for a post-Brexit Britain, authorities are implementing new speed restrictions on the M275 heading into the City of Portsmouth.
A 30mph limit is also set to be implemented on sliproads in the area, as well as on the A31.
Freight heading to the International Port could well be delayed as new checks and requirements come into force, which in turn will result in more traffic in the area. Lorries will be directed to a check-in station before heading to the Port itself, however.
Motorists are being urged to allow themselves extra time when travelling through the area, which includes those heading to the Isle of Wight ferry from Portsmouth Gunwharf.

obviously the decisions are being taken by old people with slow reactions – there is no need for such a snails pace on a road like that
Blame people who voted for brexit.
if you like the eu that much why don’t you move there
Blame the people who voted Labour. Now we have to deal with endless terrorism thanks to Tony Blair’s warmongering in the middle east.
No it is the remainers scaremongering again.
I agree that on a road like that 40mph is ludicrous. If it gets busy you slow down anyway. But why blame old people for making this decision? That comment is equally ludicrous.
it is obvious – older people do not generally like fast drivers and older people are generally in the roles, where decisions like this are made ..they made this decision based on their own driving abilities, not the road itself
What complete rubbish .the lower limit is to reduce tailbacks.
garbage scud – slower traffic just increases tailbacks
No it does not .controlled variable speed limits stops the traffic from concertinering. But only if idiot drivers obey the rules.
Hahaha what a dumb message blaming old people, I’m in my early twenties and if I’m using that road and stuck in traffic the last thing I need is for some selfish inexperienced idiot ploughing into the rear end at some ludricous speed ,so many selfish young people just look at their ignorance regarding the covid, what makes me laugh is that they believe everything that they see on Facebook or twatter.
The speed limit is to protect lives just obay it dumbasses
nope – if you wish to plod along like some donkey nobead, you crack on, the rest of us understand that we aren’t on a sightseeing tour and need to be places.
So what you are saying is you are quite happy to drive any speed you like and sod the safety of everyone else . Idiot .
Why not introduce variable speed limits to suit the conditions. No need for slow limits when the road is empty and slow it down when traffic is very heavy.
Obviously intent on increasing emissions so they can press for fossil fuel vehicles to be eliminated
Properly implemented this can result in greater throughput of traffic, AND higher average speeds!
The article states “going into the city”
As long as theres no speed limit on leaving the rsole of Hampshire
