The number of unemployed Islanders claiming the benefit Jobseekers Allowance was significantly lower last month than in August 2013, according to figures released today (Wednesday).
A total of 1,502 Isle of Wight residents were claiming JSA during August, a drop of 1,218 claimants year-on-year. It reveals a drop of 122 claimants from 1,624 in July 2014.
The number of claimants is expected to rise again over the next two months with the Summer period drawing to a close resulting in seasonal jobs ending.
A total of 1.9% of the Island’s resident population aged between 16-64 are claiming JSA.
