The Isle of Wight’s 2 Green Councillors have indicated their support for the Alliance budget to be presented at tomorrow’s (Wednesday’s) full council meeting.
The Greens are in favour of the budget’s focus on affordable housing for Island residents, coastal flood protection and the Council’s commitment to meet Net Zero emission targets.
Councillors Claire Critchison (Chale, Niton & Shorwell) and Joe Lever (Carisbrooke & Gunville) have been working as part of a group of Independents and Greens who took over the Isle of Wight Council in May 2021.
Cllr Claire Chritchison – Vice-Chair of the Council – said:
“Affordable housing provision is of great concern to the Green Party, and we will be supporting this proposed budget to enable delivery of a £29m scheme for housing affordable to Island residents. We must address the housing crisis on the island whilst also protecting the countryside for people and wildlife to enjoy.”
The Independent-Green Alliance Budget includes initiatives to tackle the impacts of climate change. There is a £6million commitment to coastal protection and flood defences at Bembridge, the Bay area, and Ventnor, which will protect 5,000 homes from flooding.
The budget will also see the continued development of an Island-wide electric vehicle charging strategy, support for the UNESCO Biosphere and Dark Sky Status, and establishing a Mission Zero Community Hub to work towards the Isle of Wight’s net zero emissions targets.
Cllr Joe Lever said:
“The Independent-Green Alliance budget proposal is a pragmatic response to over a decade of Conservative government cuts to local council budgets. With the promised Island Deal delayed again for another year – if we will ever receive it at all – councillors have had to prioritise young people, the elderly and the most vulnerable whilst also supporting the local economy to recover from the effects of the pandemic. Green councillors in the room are making a real difference on the Isle of Wight.”
Net zero?? Fuel poverty …………
The green party is a fake party made to appease green voters. If they really cared for the environment they be very progressive with their policies.

Perhaps these “green” councillors would like to pay my increase in council tax….No I thought not.
