The NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups from across Southampton, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth are asking for your views about the provision of In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) in the future.
In February 2013 the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published updated clinical guidelines regarding funding for assisted conception, and as a result the NHS in the area has now asked public health specialists to review the most recent evidence of clinical and cost-effectiveness for IVF and Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
As part of that review process the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) serving Fareham and Gosport, Isle of Wight, North East Hampshire and Farnham, North Hampshire, Portsmouth, South Eastern Hampshire, Southampton and West Hampshire, are also seeking views from the public.
That public feedback will then be considered alongside the recommendations of clinicians, before each CCG makes a decision about funding of, and eligibility for, IVF treatment on the NHS.
Currently, the local NHS offers one cycle of IVF treatment to women who meet the eligibility criteria.
Dr David Chilvers, the clinical lead for Fareham and Gosport CCG and speaking on behalf of all eight CCGs said:
“Each of the CCGs is keen to ensure that the views of the local community are heard alongside the views of local clinicians, before any decisions are made regarding assisted conception – we want to hear from people living across Hampshire regarding this issue.
“Each CCG has an annual budget which has to be used to commission (buy) a very wide range of health services and treatments for local people, from urgent care services to treatments for long-term conditions, medicines, x-rays and community services,” added Dr Chilvers. “All eight CCGs offer IVF but we need to ensure we find the right balance between offering this high-cost treatment, and being able to meet the other health needs of the people in our local communities too.”
To share your views local people are asked to complete our online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/ivf-review-2014.
