A night of drunken behaviour in Newport and Ryde, as locals and visitors alike enjoyed the freedoms of Tier 1, led to Newport’s custody suite being declared the busiest in Hampshire overnight.
Officers detained a number of individuals as a result of several public order incidents and drunken disorder.
2 men from Portsmouth were among those arrested following a fight and several COVID breaches in Newport Town Centre.
Others in custody were arrested for public order, breaches of various court orders and domestic assault.

Earlier people said higher tiers would come over here seems they were right, and there is no way to stop them
It will all end in tears !
Tiers
Pull the ferries, NOW. If you don’t you are going to be held responsible.
You thought about moving to N. Korea?
Might even be a good idea for all you know. 🙂
And what about people who work on the mainland?
Proof of travel for work would be good to provide. Ferries and employers could figure out some kind of pass if they thought about it ?
I would genuinely like to know why people are coming over, l know desperate pissheads will come ,but why others, there’s not a lot of difference between tier 2 and 1.
Yet DAILY boat loads arrive with those not tested floating across the channel to then work illegally in food establishments spreading God knows what, and ‘nothing’ is ‘done’ OR said.
They’re coming over in their droves on the ferries, fastcast, red jet and hovercraft I think.
Odd that, the public have been saying it would happen, shame the people in charge do not listen.
I can see a spike in people with the virus happening here very soon.
Sadly unknown to the drunken revellers, individuals will have their New Year ruined by disease or even death, just so ‘they’ could have one night of fun.
That though is the extremes in our society now. We have the snow flake type treating every word as ‘offensive’ yet the other extreme grows ever worse, ever more greedy, violent, corrupt and uncaring.
Balance is lost as the snow flake type think that we must keep being ‘nicer’ to sort out societies issues, yet the growing numbers of vile just see it as weakness to be exploited to the max, and they do.
Just listen to normal, balanced people, not extremes ‘either’ end of the spectrum.
Feels good to be No.1
And yet the ferries are full of people going to the mainland too work and do their shopping so what is the difference
The difference is, Andy, that those who go to North Island for work purposes are decent people, who should be protected. Whereas those to whom this report relates are drunken scum simply bent on violence and disruption. They must be stopped.
necessity and selfishness. Go figure which is which, or toss a coin, bound to come up right eventually.
Dave Stewart said last Friday
“We are working hard with the police and the ferry companies to put out messages that such behaviour is totally irresponsible and we will be supporting local businesses in managing any groups in a Covid-secure way that arrive with this intent.
WELL THAT WORKED NOT !!!!!
The images of a Newport pub on TV last week showed to me anything but a covid safe environment, people wandering around, no social distancing, so the above is no surprise.
Its a flu virus and bear in mind the flu kills more people every year you are falling in the trap of the government cover up as it all seems strange that the hospitals aren’t full as the media say and we are losing record numbers to Cancer! if you wish to stand in a que where people treat 2 meters as 10 meters and walk around with a mask that restricts your breathing then fine but keep dont try and promote what clearly is a total control project!
Yes and a north country bloke saying everyone should join him …
Unfortunately most of us have said this would happen as some idiots don’t yet realize the seriousness of covid and the next step will be the NHS busiest in Hampshire.
I hope they issued fines to all of them or maybe they should be named and shamed !!.
Flaming Muppets! Ferries should be essential travel only. Why arnt we as an island policing the situation better?? If the people in charge wont look out for us, as theyre paid very well to do so, Then we should look out for our selves, it’s our right. Or have we had that taken from us as well?
Complete bloody waste of time making the Island a tier 1 area and then allow a load of tier 2 and tier 3 p*ssheads come over here undoing it all. There’ll be 1000 cases here by new year. Hold those who allowed it to account when it all kicks off again.
Ummm – Newport is not in Hampshire it’s on the Isle of Wight- a separate county.
The Island is a county in its own right.
Not in the realm of Hampshire Constabulary
Proof of travel for work would be good to provide. Ferries and employers could figure out some kind of pass if they thought about it ?
People will be people. If it was the other way around a bunch of us would be off to mainland pubs any chance we get. It’s the same as kids traveling from San Diego to Tijuana just for a night of legal drinking.
