IE154851The Isle of Wight Council Rights of Way team will be closing the byways which are on their network (not byways on the Island Roads network) to motor vehicles this week.

The signs have started to be erected and the closure will run through the winter for approximately 6 months.

The winter byway closures are to try and protect the surface from damage which can be caused by leisure vehicles on the unsealed wet and muddy surfaces of these routes, the off road type 4 X 4 vehicles which are traditionally used on byways can cause rutting and deep puddles which then poses difficulties or hazards for all other user types and takes lots of time and resources to make good again.

Anyone who sees vehicles still using these Byways are asked to make note of their registration number, time and date and forward the details onto the Island’s Country Watch team by phoning Hampshire Constabulary on 101.
