The Melbourne Ardenlea Hotel in Shanklin is back open for business after proving to the Isle of Wight Council that its electrics and gas supplies are now safe.
As first reported by Island Echo, the hotel on Queen’s Road was shut down by Council officials with immediate effect last month due to the dangerous state of its utilities.
The hotel was planning to re-open following the period of lockdown but the Council were alerted to the fact that the premises had deteriorated to an extent that it was ‘unsafe and unhygienic’.
It’s now been confirmed by the local authority that certification has been evidenced for both the electric and gas utilities meaning the prohibition notice has been lifted.
Although the building may now be safe it’s far from pleasing for guests who have been leaving poor Tripadvisor reviews online. 1 review from ‘Edward K’, left only yesterday, describes the Melbourne Ardenlea as ‘disgraceful’, stating that ‘words can’t describe how bad it is’. Others describe the hotel as ‘disgusting’ and a ‘cesspit’.
The Isle of Wight Council is keeping a sharp eye on the hotel, which remains under investigation for a number of other matters.
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has said:
“The hotel is still under investigation for a number of potential offences. Trading Standards has also had complaints where people have been left feeling they have been misled into making a booking based on the advertisements and description of this hotel.
“Communication received by the Environmental Health department from the hotel included the provision of certification to confirm that all electrical and gas works had been completed by competent persons to standards demonstrating that they are now safe, with no further immediate risk to the employees or guests. Subsequently the Prohibition Notice was lifted.”
