A cat has had its leg amputated after being ‘deliberately abused’ in Bembridge over the weekend.
The animal was discovered in the Lane End area of the village during the early hours of Sunday morning.
Vets who tended to the distressed family pet have said that the cat received ‘blunt force trauma’, with indications that it was physically hit, stamped on, or kicked – not hit by a car.
The cat’s owners have had to pay out £2,000 in vet bills after the decision was taken to amputate the injured leg.
Addressing those responsible, the cat’s owner has said:
“My daughter is distraught.
“I hope you had fun deliberately breaking a cat’s leg!”
UPDATE – Isle of Wight-based Feline Welfare has been in touch with further details about the incident.
It’s been confirmed that the leg was not broken, but suffered an irreparable dislocation. The vet bills to date have cost £921.
Feline Welfare has now set up a Facebook Funding post to help with the cost of the vet bills, as the owners are in not in a position to pay. Over £600 has been raised so far.

Utter bastards… I hope whoever did this – gets the Karma that they deserve..wouldn’t try it with a person no doubt, because they are absolutely spineless
Sickening, just sickening 🙁
Who would be so evil? I’d love to get hold of them and it wouldn’t just be a leg broken. Scum.
There are some nasty people out there!
If they’re ever caught, they should be made to pay the vet bill and then have one of ther legs lopped off!
Fair play to the owner for putting their hands in their pockets. Most cats wouldn’t of been so lucky.
I wouldn’t hesitate to pay to get my pet treated and I’d like to think most pet owners feel the same. They are a family member.
I am sickened by this but would like to point out that Feline Welfare have raised the money, not sure if part or full payment, for the vet’s bill. This is through people donating to a fund raising page. So sad.
Any animal owner would do this for their pet for sure. They are part of our family. We chose them and therefore have a duty to keep them well and happy just as we do our children/family.
A vile thing to do to some little creature. We are the first to whinge and go to get treatment if in pain, and so to deliberately hurt something that can’t even get help by itself is disgusting.
I hope whoever did this suffers ten fold, but sadly likely won’t, as face it low life never do, they just ‘take’ from society.
I would rather give any and all charity to animals, as people CAN help themselves, animals never can.
There are a growing number of druggie’s hanging around. I see young lads often on bikes in Steyne park, on a mobile waiting to deal.
With more social housing the problem will grow I am afraid. Not saying that druggies did this, but they are often of the lower elements and drugs and the vilest of crimes oft go hand in hand.
Our furry babies are being hurt and injured – in any way – far too often and usually beyond our control, so THANK GOD for pro-active charity Feline Welfare. Their reaction is immediate when humanly possible in an emergency such as this. So happy that this furry person received treatment and will soon be mended!
