This year’s Ventnor Boxing Day Swim has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, organisers have announced.
2020 was meant to mark the 40th anniversary of the traditional Christmas event, but COVID-19 fears have led to its cancellation.
Each year thousands of people descend on Ventnor Esplanade to watch the brave few dozen take a quick dip in the icy seas.
The 2019 instalment was also cancelled as a result of rough seas, meaning it will be 3 years between swims with the last being held in 2018 and the next in 2021.

Fear, fear, fear. For heavens sake people, get a grip. These same people will still be standing in queues INSIDE the supermarkets buying their Christmas shopping! Little wonder there’s so much depression and suicide around. We need to get our sense of proportion back before it’s too late.
Likely be cold then an all
Yes highly likely to catch Covid outside on the beach. Cornwall was crammed all summer they are in tier1. Another hysterical over reaction.
Absolutely, shopping centres crammed full of people in tier 3 areas! Pathetic inconsistencies
You have to remember sadly that no fun, happiness or communication with others is “allowed “
Another Pathetic cancellation!!
Sadly though, cv is unaware that the event is for charity. IF, this was mainlanders swimming en masse this bb would be full of woe, and misery forecasts and wanting them stoned to death as they emerged from the brine.
The ‘look at me’ crowd can still donate, without the limelight shining upon them, or they can swim individually without the razz a matazz, so one still has a choice.
Be awful if just one person caught cv by swallowing body fluids from a nearby swimmer coughing or spluttering as cold does not kill cv.
Only one year, then back in the spotlight for ‘doing my bit’ again.
It’s not only one year though is it these pathetic rules are just going to get tighter and go on for longer with everyone complying with them until we are living like North Korea under the excuse of covid
One wonders if this was a large group of mainlanders swimming like this if the comments would be similar.
I wager they would just be criticising the fool hardy actions, and saying the virus doesn’t recognise it is a charity, and spit, wee, poo and skin particles washed from one body to another could still infect even in the cold as this virus lives in cold for a long while, longer than in the Summer warmth.
The crowd watching all add to the danger of spreading this disease. People could still give if they want to, and swim by themselves for charity, but of course, wouldn’t have the spotlight and the ‘look at me’ feelgood factor. Depends who you are really doing it for I guess.
The look at me brigade will still do it, they did last year even though it was cancelled due to the weather, it’s become more about them than raising money for charity.
I for one shan’t be attending. Awful coughing people everywhere.
Bad parody… Sha’n’t has two apostrophes. Regards, Lady Dunstanding. The real one. Really! That Toogood fellow ought to have words with wind-up merchants such as you. Still, imitation is considered, in Wilde circles as the sincerest form of flattery. Thank you very much, sir.
“patients be kept for observation 15 min post administering”
You get that with the flu vaccine.
“Scientists call for Christmas holidays to be scrapped”
No, they have not. Stop spreading your lies and misinformation.

You can indeed, sir! If that Blake woman trundles out her bathing machines I shall don the old homespun and take a dip m’self. Regards, Lady Dunstanding.
