27 members of the Wight Tri club took part in the 4th event of the Wight Tri Winter Duathlon Series, with the choice of either 2.5km or 5 km runs, either side of a 19km undulating cycle.
1st in the nominated event was Sean Williams, who was just 22 seconds over his nominated time of 1:17:00 for the long run course. 2nd closest was Arielle Elton-Walters, who posted 1:20:40 for the short run course, and 40 seconds outside her time, with Janet Fletcher 3rd with finishing 45seconds quicker in 1:25:45 for the long course.
There was a good tussle at the head of the field with Sean Williams, new member, Jack Hodgson and Dean Pike all vying for the top spot. Jack had a superb first run split of 18:58 to enter T1 over a minute ahead of Sean and Dean, but swift transitions by the more seasoned duathletes, saw him lose valuable time. Even with similar bike spilts and 2nd run splits, Jack could not hold off Sean. Sean came out on top after a swift 2nd transition to finish the fastest in 1:17:22, with Jack only 16 seconds behind. Unfortunately Dean got slowed down by traffic on the bike course but finished with a strong run to take 3rd in 1:19: 14.
Jan Fletcher was the fastest female in the long course with Kaitlin Wilson fastest overall in the short course event in 1:11:06.
Wight Tri would like to thank Nick Kenney and all the timekeepers and marshalls for making this such a well run event.
The next event in the series is the Chillerton Duathlon on 27th February 2022. Further details available from the Wight Tri Facebook page.
Wight Tri has also been well represented in the recent Ryde Harriers XC Championships and Ryde Harriers 10mile Road Race events.
Ryde Harriers Cross Country Championships
13 members took part in the Ryde Harriers XC Championships with several top 10 performances.
New member Rob Johnson was leading the men’s race, when unfortunately he was mis-directed off course by a Marshall. However, he quickly realised this and managed to haul back to 6th position overall and 2nd MV40 to finish in 47:10. Tom George finished ahead of him in 4th, in 46:48 and also took the MV40 title, with Craig Wilson also securing a top 10 position to finish 9th overall and 2nd MV50 in 48:28.
Top 10 performances were also achieved by the woman’s team, with new members, Laois Bennis and Amy Chambers taking 4th and 1st senior and 5th female and 2nd F35 positions with excellent times of 57:03 and 58:03 respectively, with Lucy Doorly finishing next in 6th and 3rd F35 in 58:12. They would certainly have won 1st female team.
