Wight Eagles U12s comfortably beat Winchester Flyers at Queensgate on Saturday (12th March).
The Island side started quickly and brightly with new signing Kelsie Ronan scoring on her debut after just 1 minute and 30 seconds. This came as a massive shock to the travelling team, who had beaten the Eagles 2-0 last season.
The island side were now full of confidence and started playing the ball quickly around the Winchester defence. The Eagles were soon 2-0 up after some fantastic play down the right-hand side and a quickly taken corner by Lyla.
Winchester were unable to create any chances, and Eloise in goal didn’t have much to do with a strong back three in front of her and a well-disciplined midfield. The midfield were connecting up well with Kelsie upfront, who was holding the ball up and playing it wide.
Shortly after 20 minutes, debutant Kelsie grabbed her 2nd goal to make the score 3-0. Then, another quick attack saw the Eagles reach half time with a 4-0 advantage.

The Eagles came out in the second half very much settled and knew any mistakes would give Winchester a chance to get back into the game. Winchester had a couple of chances midway through second half but nothing troubled Eloise in goal. The away side had a couple of corners but were unable to score.
A few more substitutions gave the Island side some fresh legs. The Eagles’ discipline meant they kept the ball well and held onto their well-deserved lead. Imogen was now playing wide on the left, creating a more attacking threat for the Island side.
10 minutes from full time, the Eagles made 1 further attack and sealed the game with some fantastic work by Imogen down the left (5-0).
This was a well-deserved victory for the Eagles, who are now flying with back-to-back wins.

After the game, coach Dan Verstraeten said:
“The girls were amazing today. We had a very good training session on the pitch on Friday and managed to work on a few things to improve our attacking threat, and this really showed today.
“Kelsie coming in has given us a more attacking threat up top. This makes us more dynamic in midfield and with Lyla on the right and Imogen on the left, we’re now in a really strong position.”
