Wight Eagles U12s travelled to Mudeford on Saturday (5th March) seeking their first league win of 2022.
Straight from the off, Mudeford – kicking down the hill – put the pressure on with the wind very much behind them.
The mainland side tried to pressurise the Islanders early on but had little luck trying to play around the Eagles’ tough back 3, so resorted to trying a couple of long-range shots. However, Eloise in goal was little troubled and much improved, after working with New Academy Goalkeeper Coach, Craig Jaspers.
As the game settled and the Eagles got on top, they started playing some great football around the mainland team. The Island side showed great link up play from midfield to the front and found themselves 1-0 up at the halftime break.

The Eagles really came out of the blocks in the 2nd half, putting pressure on again and moving the ball fast. With Lyla on the right and a new advanced position for Olivia on the left, balls were soon flying across the 6-yard box for the Eagles to make the score 2-0.
The Island side had 6 corners in a row, pushing Mudeford back to their goal line. With 15 minutes left, a couple of injuries to The Wight Eagles side saw more changes, with Jess coming back on the left side full of confidence. The Eagles went 3-0 up and Eagles were now flying to victory.
Amelia then broke through and – after a great link up with Magenta – put the ball in the back of the net to complete a well-deserved 4-0 victory and earn 3 points for the young Island side.

After the game, coach Dan Verstraeten said:
“The girls were fantastic today. They gave me everything. They were quick and closed play down. They didn’t give Mudeford a second.
“When we had the ball, we didn’t lose it. So many positives today, and the girls really showed what they’re capable of.
“I’m really pleased with the result. They deserved that and with Stubbington losing as well, it puts us in such a good place now.”
Isle of Wight Eagles U-12s next face Winchester at home this Saturday (12th March) at Queensgate school Easy Cowes. Kick-off is at 13:00.
