Roads Policing officers from the mainland travelled to the Isle of Wight over the weekend to target anti-social vehicles and motorcycles across the Island in an operation know as Op Wightwash.
2 unmarked Police cars and 3 marked Police motorcycles crossed the Solent to join the local Joints Operations Unit.
Despite the downpours, officers carried out speed enforcement at some of the highlighted areas around the Military Road and surrounding villages.
Police say there were very few motorcycles or vehicles out and about at one point the fastest recorded road users were some hardy road cyclists travelling from Blackgang to Niton.
Local hotspots for incidents where someone has been killed or seriously injured were targeted in the afternoon, with an emphasis on speed enforcement and road safety messages. This included the A3056 at Apse Heath.
Formal action is being taken against a number of motorists with 12x speed enforcement tickets issued, 1x mobile phone use offence, 1x altered noisy exhaust on a motorcycle and 1x dangerous load offence.
The last offence mentioned involved a vehicle with a full size trampoline insecurely strapped to the roof of the car, protruding across into the opposite carriageway.

Fantastic. We need more operations like this to catch the speeders and the loud exhausts from modified cars and bikes. Unmarked Police cars would catch more of these inconsiderate drivers in their noisy vehicles. Well done and thanks to all the officers who were involved in this operation on the IOW.

Choosing a day when motor cyclists were safely in the garages, then now, numbers of such crimes will be deemed low, less paperwork, and complaints ignored as ‘stats’ will show few crime committed.
A great result for the Police as now, looks like just a bunch of whingers here.
Operation Wightwash? I don’t suppose the old bill asked the IOW branch of CAMRA if they could ‘borrow’ their magazine and website name for their own purposes. Perhaps they should also check the weather forecast before their next ‘operation’.
Only goes to prove there is no effective policing of traffic on the Island, what are we paying for ?
What we are paying for is a police force that is less use than a chocolate teapot. I reported a hit and run to the police with the offending cars registration, names and addresses of two independent witnesses, and got a letter weeks later stating that the incident “did not meet their criteria for investigation”, presumably as no-one died. Still, the offender might manage to kill someone next time eh?
Shame they didn’t come to north road in Shanklin and catch that noisy green and black delivery bike of dominoes goes up our at 50 mph

What a stupid day to pick hardly anyone out due to rain. About time they also targeted cars with no tax etc. The gov. site is useless cars are reported countless times but nothing ever happens. Surely if they’re not taxed their insurance is invalid? I was advised that island roads deal with them if reported is this true does anyone know?
No car tax should be reported to DVLA not Island roads….
Have reported it to them many times nothing is done someone told me island roads will make a note .
As soon as they are on the boat the island grape vine lets all the illegal drivers hide for the day.

Always picking on motorcycles it the cars they need to sort out too fast, cutting corners, no indication where there going and in the towns not national speed limits must b a important person living out there somewhere for them to be going there all the time and get out your cars police and walk down ryde now and then

Upper Lane in Brighstone is like a race track for a lot of vehicles and motorbikes – 30 miles limit frequently ignored! There is no foot path along part of the lane and children on bikes, people with dogs and elderly people have to walk in the road. 20 miles speed limit would be appropriate and safer for all users
