Wightlink-Wight Mountain Cycle Race Team’s Joe Staunton and James Veal competed in tough road races during the Bank Holiday weekend (30th April/1st May).

Joe and James both took part in the Portsmouth North End CC National B E/1/2 Road Race and the Chitterne National B E/1/2 Road Race up against some of the top Elite and Professional riders in the country. A great effort by both riders over the relentless, technical 80-mile courses and a learning curve for James in his first National race at this level.

James was in action again on Tuesday evening (26th April) at Goodwood racing in the first round of the E/1/2/3 Southdown Velo Summer Series. The bunch split after only a few laps, and a small group pushed on and managed to stay away despite the best efforts of the chasing peleton. James was in a number of attacks and finished strong in the bunch, just missing out on the points.

Team members Oliver Nolan, Joe Staunton and Ewan Cook travelled to the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth on Wednesday (27th April). Juvenile rider, Ewan, who was competing in his first U-16 circuit race put in a great performance just missing out on a podium, finishing in 4th place. Ewan really enjoyed the event and is looking forward to racing again next week.

Joe and Oliver competed in the 5th round of the E/1/2 evening circuits. A fast-paced start and an early break split the field in two. Joe and Oliver worked hard to bring the break back but were up against a number of RCR riders who controlled the race with one of their team mates up the road. Joe managed to get away with 3 laps to go finishing in 5th place and picking up some valuable points. Oliver finished in the bunch.
