18,400 employees and 6,500 self-employed individuals across the Isle of Wight have been supported by the UK Government through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) and Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS), latest figures reveal.
The CJRS and SEISS schemes are run by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) as part of a package of support measures for businesses affected by the coronavirus outbreak.
Businesses have furloughed 18,400 employees on the Island (up to 31st July 2020) since the CJRS was launched on 20th April 2020. This is 35% of eligible employments.
The SEISS was rolled out ahead of schedule in May and has financially supported 6,500 self-employed individuals here on the Isle of Wight. Grants totalling £17.4million have been paid out to the Island’s self-employed (up to 31st July 2020) – this is a take-up of 76% with a total potentially eligible population of 8,600. The average claim is £2,700.
Those eligible to claim the SEISS grant can now claim a second and final grant in August of up to £6,750.
Rishi Sunak, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said:
“The UK Government is doing everything we can to protect jobs and businesses in the Isle of Wight and across the UK during the crisis. Our unprecedented job retention and self-employment support schemes have supported the livelihoods of millions and will help ensure our recovery is as swift as possible.”

Chris Whiffy at the Daily Update effectively explains why lockdown is a waste of time. The Vast Majority Will NOT Die Even If We Have NO Vaccine”
The Vast Majority Will NOT Die Even If We Have NO Vaccine
And the selfish “vast majority” will probably be quite happy with this. Not so nice if you are one of the tiny minority, though, is it?
Never mind a vaccine, the one thing that seems to be in really short supply at present is compassion.
It is the minority that should be protected, what is selfish about that, rather than imprisoning and muzzling the innocent let alone putting hundred of thousands of jobs at risk across the country.
I do not understand why the economy has to be destroyed when the SENSIBLE solution is to let people work and PLAY as normal which then in itself keeps the economy going to protect the minority.
My Mother who is in her late seventies doesn’t want this mollycoddling, her attitude is ‘you have to eat a bit of dirt before you die’, suck-it up and get on with life.
Valid points, I agree, but if the “vast majority” would show a bit more respect for the social distancing and face-covering guidelines, then lockdowns wouldn’t be neccessary. Their selfishness is what keeps this virus in business.
It wasn’t me who voted you down, btw.
