Isle of Wight Talented Athletes Oliver Evans and Toby Atherton have just returned from Italy where they have been competing in the 29er Eurocup finals at Lake Garda, which featured 132 boats from 20 nations.

After 2 days of qualifying, the boats were split into Gold and Silver fleets – with Oliver and his sailing partner Will Jarman and Toby and his sailing partner Freddie Peters both making the Gold fleet.

After a thrilling few day’s sailing, Toby and Freddie finished 29th overall and Oliver and Will 32nd – a fantastic achievement from a fleet of 132. They were also placed 4th and 5th out of the British boats taking part.

Toby said:

“It was a fantastic experience to sail beneath the huge, imposing Dolomite mountains, which created strong thermal breezes. It was a great learning event for Freddie and I as we worked to develop our new partnership and recognised some areas that we really need to focus on over the forthcoming Winter training sessions.”

Oliver said:

“It was a really competitive event and a great experience to race against Europe’s top 29er sailors.”

Oliver and Toby are part of the Isle of Wight Council Talented Athlete scheme, through which they receive discounted ferry travel from Wightlink.
