Students across the Isle of Wight have been receiving their A-Levels today (Thursday) with some impressive results across the board.
The coronavirus pandemic has caused great concern for students and teachers alike. The grading process established by the Government this year involved schools assessing each of their students and awarding them the grades they considered they would have achieved, before all grades were moderated and confirmed nationwide by external exam boards.
The grades received were based on each student’s prior performance in each subject, taking into account their coursework, mock exam results and their overall attainment across the last few years, as well as the sixth form’s previous performance and the national performance in each subject. These grades were then assessed by external exams boards and final grades awarded.

Students at Cowes Enterprise College are among those celebrating today, with many going on to attend some of the country’s top universities, including Oxford.
Excellent individual achievements include Kieran Wetherick, who achieved A*A*A*A and will be going to the University of Oxford to study History and Politics. After getting 2 A*s and 2 As, Tanya Ekova is off to Bulgaria to study Dentistry.
Akhilla Hancock, who got A*AB and is off to Loughborough University to study Aeronautical Engineering, whilst Jenny Markham, who achieved 3 As, is going to UCL to study Anthropology.

“Without a doubt this has been a very unusual year for students, but that doesn’t take away from all the hard work they’ve put in over the past two years, including an impressive commitment to staying positive and engaged when working remotely. We’re very proud of what they have achieved, and I’m looking forward to hearing about the exciting next steps in their journeys.”

Results awarded to Christ the King Sixth Form students have been ‘very pleasing’, with 92% of students achieving what they need to study at their first or second choice university.
“Although the A Level courses were impacted by school closure, the outcomes are a credit to the hard work of our students and that of our very talented and committed teachers.
“It is fantastic to see the progress made by many of our students from entry into Year 7 through to Year 13. The high grades achieved by our students will mean that the majority should gain entry to the University of their choice. There are a number of notable successes with students achieving Oxbridge places, obtaining the necessary grades to do medicine and other high profile degree and apprentice courses. This is to be celebrated.”

It’s been another great year for the students and staff of the Island VI Form, with Governors and the leadership teams very proud of everyone’s achievements.
The IV Form has seen some excellent results for individual students in their A Levels and BTEC studies, with some students getting straight A grades or double distinctions. The vast majority of students are going on to their first choice universities.

“We have over 140 students going on from the Island to follow a huge range of university courses including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Law and Fashion, to name just a few. Many students have gained entry to top Russell Group Universities across the country. Congratulations to all students on their achievements and I would like to thank parents and staff for all their support”.
Platform One College of Music just keeps going from strength to strength with students once again achieving outstanding results, despite lockdown.
Over 50 students completed Level 3 BTEC qualifications with 50% gaining Distinction grades. Year 2 students achieved the full BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Music, which is equivalent to taking 3 full A Levels. The majority of students exceeded challenging targets, with 10 students gaining the equivalent of 3 straight A, full A-Level grades.
David Pontin, Director of Platform One College of Music, has said:
“We are absolutely delighted with our students’ results again this year. We are so proud of the achievements of each and every student. It is fantastic that all of our students will progress to their first-choice universities, with some students progressing straight into employment and self-employment”.
Platform One students are progressing to various universities including University of Chichester, BIMM, University of West London, Goldsmiths University and University of South Wales. Many students will stay on at Platform One to study the BA (Hons) Commercial Music, which is validated by the University of Chichester.
Priory School in Whippingham is proud to have obtained a 100% pass rate in all A-level subjects, with all all students achieving A* or A grades in English Literature, Art and Design, Drama and Maths at A2.
The school has said:
“This is a testament to the hard work of our students and their tutors and shows the ability of Priory School to shepherd students to the highest academic success.”
Ryde Academy has seen 70% of students securing A*-C at A-Level.
Students will now be going on to take up places at university, with Owen Buchan and Emily Faithfull going on to study History and Politics and Sport and Exercise Science at York and Surrey respectively.
