Hampshire Trophy finalists Shanklin have reached the final of the Isle of Wight Challenge Cup by beating Sandown in the Bay Derby on Saturday 9th April.
In the 1st half, Shanklin came close to taking the lead at the Fairway Sports complex when a trademark Iain Seabrook free kick bounced off the crossbar in the 5th minute. On the half hour mark, Shanklin took the lead when Jordan Cooke saw his weak shot fumbled by Sandown keeper Adam Russ, and referee Ali Taylor ruled that the ball had crossed the goal line despite Russ’ vehement protests.
Half time: Sandown 0-1 Shanklin
In the 2nd half, Nicky Vyse was unlucky not to extend Shanklin’s lead, but failed to capitalize on the opportunity. Sandown’s captain Michael Smart had a goal disallowed when he clashed with the Shanklin keeper in the 65th minute. 5 minutes later, Smart had a further chance to score but fell over the ball 5 yards from the goal line. Sandown were aggrieved not to have been awarded a penalty in the closing stages of the game when Wayne Newnham appeared to have handled the ball, but referee Taylor declined to award a spot kick to the home side.

After the game, winning Shanklin manager Paul Haward said:
“I’m absolutely delighted for the lads to be in another cup final; they have been brilliant all season. I set them a goal 2 months ago to get to 3 cup finals. We are now in 2 finals with a semi-final still to play, so the lads have responded really well, and I’m proud of where our club is right now. With it only being 1-0 there were some nervy moments towards the end, but we did enough to put ourselves in the final”
Sandown manager Mark Mulholland said:
“For the 2nd week in a row, I have asked for a performance and got it. We have come a long way in a short space of time. I’m gutted we came away with nothing, but very proud of how we played.”
Shanklin will meet either Binstead or the winners of the 4th round tie between Ryde Saints and W&B in the final of the Challenge Cup. Shanklin are also in the semi-finals of the Memorial Cup, in which they will play the winners of Ryde Saints v Bembridge.
